ADVICE FOR SUCCESS - Part 2 (Part time jobs)

Advice for Part-time jobs for students.

These strategies worked for me and may not work for every one.
I will also ask ppl to share their stories so everyone learns or benefits from them.
Before I start, a very wise person (my father) advised me when you go to Aus dont work where other desi students work. (I was very skeptical of that statement), but he had years of experience living all over the world, so I didn't argue. Boy, that was the best piece (one line) advice I have ever got!
So when I came to Aus, I quickly figured out that most desi students:
1. Work with Desies (specially on cash).
2. They work at 7/11 or fuel stations.
3. Restaurant/food industry.

Let me elaborate so there are no misconceptions.

I am all for working with desies in professional jobs. However, part-time casual work which involves cash in hand and no contract - I still recommend avoiding Desi'es for new students. My justifications are:

1. They usually don't pay u market rate. (7/11 is a good example).
2. I have seen many cases where ppl are not paid as you have no contracts.
3. You end up speaking Urdu and talk Paki politics, resulting in no exposure to Aussie lingo, geo-politics, AFL, local trends. These are soft skills on needs when they interact with people in interviews or when we Network.

So I made sure, I didn't do these jobs

What jobs did I do?

1. I did a $100 Cricket Umpiring & coaching certification. Got a lot on weekends umpiring and after school cricket coaching (starts $25-30 ph).
2. I started private tutoring [I was a good student in Pk and had some tutoring experience:)].
I made a marketing strategy, where I created a flyer and distributed to parents around all the schools in my area.
I taught Biology, History and Science to school kids. At one stage I even taught Quran and Urdu. My average rate ranged btw ($40-60 per hour).
I smashed distinctions in my Masters course and started marketing myself as a tutor to my junior students. Most of them were working long hours and didnt study much. So that was a perfect market for me https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/f4c/1/16/1f642.png:).
3. I made some local Aussie friends and planned to get myself a forklift licence (although I didn't do it) but it is a skilled job and you can easily make $40-50 ph.
The licence will cost you $800.
4. I did a swim instructor course (never used it), but you can easily make ($30ph).
5. I was a topper in my class at the end of Masters and the Uni offered my tutoring job ($80 ph).
Other things that you can do:
6. Get a white card and work in construction
7. Get a traffic operator licence and work in road work sites ($30-40 ph).
8. Certificate III in fitness ($3000) work as gym instructor. Best Job!! Can charge clients ($60 ph).
9. Security ?? (Dont work on cash with Desies, if u do make sure u have a contract)
10. Get truck license (do interstate delivery) $2000 per trip.
11. Fruit picking on weekends (hard work but fun).

One can also try Uber-eats, Deliveroo and similar services. Apply for stores such as K-mart, Big W, Target, Ikea, CostCo etc and follow up with them 3 times in a month - make sure to meet the manager in person after applying (good chances you will get a job)

Happy to assist in further queries but in comments, not private msgs (reason so everyone can benefit).

All info on getting jobs and certification is available on google. So run and a search and will find the answers.

Naj Soomro

  1. Hi i was wondering if you could guide me with few things I am not clear upon. I graduated from Pakistan in 2013. I thereafter graduated in Masters in Biomedical imaging from Finland. Currently, I am enrolled as a PhD student in Finland. I am planning to apply from AMC part 1 but the problem is that I dont have any experience of housejob for 12 months. How can I apply for a provisional registration without that 12 months. What is your take on that ?

    Thanks,
    Piryanka

On popular demand, here comes the part 4 to complete the student success series in Aus.  So far what have I covered: Part 1: Overview on how you can be successful as a student in Aus. General guide. Part 2: Part time jobs Part 3: Pre-Aus arrival survival guide on do's and don't However if you have made to Aus, survived your student life, not drowned, eaten up by a shark or a croc (including human Crocs), beaten depression, and survived loneliness then this is the post for you.
